Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

Jubilee Swing Orchestra (HFX)
swing / jazz / big band

The new Jubilee Swing Orchestra is a reunion of sorts. JSO essentially picks up where the swing orches- tras of the Big Band era and Canada’s Juno award winning Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra left off. The 15-piece Jubilee Swing Orchestra plays acoustic social dance music in the traditional Big Band style. Joyful, simple and danceable; the JSO is all about big beats, not back beats. Swinging melodies new and old with spirited soloists. Halifax arranger David Christensen and writer John Wesley Chisholm are building a formidable book of original charts contextualized with incredible vintage transcriptions of the Big Band era’s best by well-known American arrangers Mike Henebry and Robert Hersh. Launched in the fall of 2010, the orchestra has been playing regular dance happenings and drawing a loyal following of the most diverse crowds you are likely to ever see at a dance music event.

Personnel: John Wesley Chisholm (guitar, Writer, MC), David Christensen (clarinet, arranger), Julian Marentette (drums), Andrew Killawee (piano, vocals),Adam Fine (bass), Tevor Wentzell (sax), Wes Mackey (sax), Dawn Hatfield (sax), Dustin LindenSmith (sax), Eric Landry (trombone), Martha Kelly (trombone), Matt Myer (trumpet), Tim Elson (trumpet) and Bob Daly (vocals)

Alex Pangman (TO)
swing / jazz / big band

Having found solace at a young age in Mildred Bailey and the vocal work of Louis Armstrong, Alex Pangman also found a calling. Proud to be known as ‘Canada’s Sweetheart Of Swing’, her natural vocal abilities and obsessive, deep apprecia- tion for that bygone era have earned her a place in our nation’s heart. She’s not old fashioned, though. Pangman is a vivacious performer who retains creative control of all her work: carefully choosing her reper- toire, composing original material, assembling her backing band and co-producing much of her recent recorded output. Rather than some casual throwback, Pangman delivers a unique, deliberate reinterpretation of one of North America’s most fertile, timeless eras. Her newest record, 33, finds the 33-year-old songstress exploring the popular songs of that spe- cific year. Backed this year by a quartet of sentimental gentleman, Pangman’s performance is a sure bet to please all generations of jazz fans.

Personnel: Alex Pangman (vocals), Chris Banks (bass), Glen Anderson (drums), Peter Hill (piano) and Drew Jurecka (fiddle and alto sax)

Jazz at the Imperial Ballroom is presented by Stewart McKelvey.
